Avocado Festival is Saturday
The 16th annual Avocado Festival will be held from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Saturday, Feb. 11, at Hale Halawai in Kailua-Kona.
The free and family friendly event, sponsored by the Sanctuary of Mana Kea Gardens, will feature an avocado grafting demonstration, avocado food preparation and tasting, discussions on growing, maintenance, pruning, varietal choices and pruning, as well as local artists, crafts, and vegan foods.
The festival will also feature live music by Sweet Kanilehua as well as Dr. Tim’s Medicine Band featuring Kurt and Serena Jarvis, Nora Stone, Emile Elliot, Davina Mar, and Stephen Kida playing vintage music.

KVBID seeks board members
The Kailua Village Business Improvement District (KVBID) is seeking eligible candidates who wish to serve on its 17-member volunteer Board of Directors. Thirteen of the 17 board seats are elected by the fee simple owners and/or lessees of land within the district.
Two board seats are open for a two-year term and will be elected at the upcoming KVBID Annual Meeting in March. One board seat is open in the Fee Simple Owners/Lessees of Land category and one in the Commercial Tenant category. All eligible candidates will be included on the ballot and members of the District will elect directors during the annual meeting.
To be eligible, applicants must own or lease land within district boundaries or lease commercial space within the district. Boundaries of the District are roughly the former Kmart to Royal Kona Resort.

Sponsors sought for Summer Food Service Program
The U.S. Department of Agriculture’s Summer Food Service Program (SFSP) is seeking sponsor organizations on all islands to help provide children in low-income communities with free meals during the summer months. The SFSP provides nutritious meals that help children to learn, play, and grow during the summer break when many schools are not in session.
Schools, public agencies, churches and private nonprofit organizations may apply to be SFSP sponsors. Sponsoring organizations receive reimbursements for serving healthy meals and snacks at approved sites to children and teenagers, 18 years and younger. Sponsors are encouraged to provide educational or recreational activities.
The Hawaii Child Nutrition Programs (HCNP) will conduct virtual workshops for new and returning sponsors in March. Personnel responsible for administering the SFSP will be required to attend.
